Physical Science Chapter 10 Test Review: FORCES

1.     What happens when two forces act in the same direction?  They add together.
2.     What is inertia?  The tendency of an object to resist change in motion.
3.     What is weight?  The force of gravity on a person or object on the surface of a planet
4.     What is friction?  The force that one surface exerts on another when the two rub against each other
5.     What is rolling friction?  Occurs when an object rolls across a surface.
6.     What is free fall?  When the only force acting on a falling object is gravity
7.     What is air resistance?  A type of friction
8.     What is mass?  A measure of how much matter is in an object.
9.     When are forces added together?  When they are acting on the same object
10.                         What is momentum?  The product of an object’s mass and velocity
11.                         What does the law of conservation of momentum state?  When two objects collide in the absence of friction, momentum is not lost
12.                         Be able to apply the law of conservation of momentum.
13.                         Which of Newton’s laws can explain a rocket’s lift off into space?  Third Law
14.                         What is required for a rocket to lift off into space?  Thrust is greater than Earth’s gravity
15.                         What is a satellite? An object that travels around another object in space
16.                         What is centripetal force?  Any force that causes an object to move in a circle
17.                         In physical science, what is motion?  A push or pull
18.                         The momentum of an object is in the same direction as its velocity.
19.                         What is gravity? The force that pulls falling objects toward Earth
20.                         What is Newton’s third law of motion?   For every action there is an equal but opposite reaction
21.                         What is the SI unit for force? Newton
22.                         How do balanced forces affect an object?  They never change the objects motion.
23.                         What is a net force?  The overall force on an object after all forces are added together
24.                         How do unbalanced forces affect an object?  Produce a change in the object’s motion
25.                         What is fluid friction?  Occurs when a solid object moves  through a fluid
26.                         What is a projectile?  An object that is thrown
27.                         Explain the relationship between the distance between two objects and gravity.  As the distance between two objects decreases, the gravitational forces between them increases
28.                         What are action- reaction pairs?  The strength of a reaction force is equal to the strength of an action force
29.                         How is the thrust of a rocket directed during lift off?  Upward
30.                         How does friction act in comparison to an object’s direction? Friction acts in a direction opposite the object’s movement
31.                         Be familiar with combining/comparing forces.  See figure 2 on page 335.
32.                         Why don’t action-reaction forces cancel out?  See page 355
33.                         Be able to calculate force given mass and acceleration.  Be able to explain the units your answer is given in.
